“A bittersweet story of young love, independence, and soul-crushing manipulation. J.A. Owenby shines a light on the impact that mental illness can have on a family.” —Dr. Sheri Kaye Hoff, PhD, Professional Life Coach
Mama didn’t want me. In fact, she would’ve traded my soul back for someone different if God would’ve let her, but he didn’t, so she was stuck with me.
For eighteen-year-old Lacey, life at home is a rollercoaster. She doesn’t think she’ll ever be good enough to truly deserve Mama’s love.
But when Lacey enters college and meets Walker, everything starts to change. Suddenly, Lacey is face to face with the realization that maybe what she’s always seen as normal really isn’t. Her entire life—and everything she’s ever believed about herself and her family—is abruptly hanging in midair.
Lacey is left facing two paths, and she has to make a choice. The first means walking away from everything she’s ever known. The other means never really knowing the truth.
The TruthShe Knew offers an honest and powerful glimpse into mental illness, the meaning of true love, and the psychological waltz that a daughter dances as she endures her mother’s unpredictable emotions, manipulation, and abuse.

My Review
Title: The Truth She Knew
Author: J.A. Owenby
Format: Digital ARC
The Truth She Knew is an emotional and heartbreaking story of abuse and learning to stand up for yourself.
Lacey has lived her life believing the lies her emotionally abusive mother has told her, which has ruined her self-esteem and confidence. When she meets Walker, she finally begins to see the truth and experience real love, but stills struggles with the effects that her strict upbringing has on her.
The story really touched me. Its depiction of mental abuse and mental health issues was strong and emotional. I felt for Lacey and her situation and hoped that she would be able to get the help that she and her family needed. She has a lot of adjustments to make and the author did a wonderful job of showing the reality of these adjustments. They didn’t just happen overnight. You can’t wave a magic wand and be free of the love and ties you have to your family no matter how they treat you. Lacey loved her mother and family despite their treatment of her and that love is honestly and accurately portrayed as is the relationships she forms with her new friends. Her willingness to get help for herself though gave me hope and was inspiring and I can’t wait to see where her journey takes her.
The book opens with a scene from Lacey’s future and the rest of the book takes place during Lacey’s teen years so I look forward to seeing how Lacey gets from point A to point B. This book ends a bit abruptly with an ending that I am not too thrilled with, but I am willing to see where the author takes us and like Lacey, I have hope.
My Rating: 4 Stars
