About the Book

Chasing Truth (Eleanor Ames #1)
by Julie Cross
Publication Date:  September 27, 2016
Publisher:  Entangled TEEN

At Holden Prep, the rich and powerful rule the school—and they’ll do just about anything to keep their dirty little secrets hidden.

When former con artist Eleanor Ames’s homecoming date commits suicide, she’s positive there’s something more going on. The more questions she asks, though, the more she crosses paths with Miles Beckett. He’s sexy, mysterious, arrogant…and he’s asking all the same questions.

Eleanor might not trust him—she doesn’t even like him—but they can’t keep their hands off of each other. Fighting the infuriating attraction is almost as hard as ignoring the fact that Miles isn’t telling her the truth…and that there’s a good chance he thinks she’s the killer.

My Review

Title: Chasing Truth
Author: Julie Cross
Format: Digital ARC
Source: Netgalley

I am trying to figure out a way to start this review and I am seriously at a loss for words.  This book has left me speechless, it was that good.  But just saying that seems so inadequate.  It is going to be so hard to write this review without spoiling some major things, but I am going to do my best…mostly because I want all of you to read and experience it for yourself.

As a lifelong fan of mysteries, both fictional and in real life, I was very excited when I read the blurb for this book.  However, I didn’t want to get my hopes up too much having read some books labeled as YA mystery/romance in the past that were more YA romance and very light on the mystery part, but this one definitely delivered on all fronts.  There was mystery, romance, teenage angst, private school drama, crime, spying…a little bit of everything, including plenty of unexpected surprises.  And as someone who watches a lot of crime shows and has read a lot of mysteries, it is pretty hard to surprise me, but this book did.  And I loved every minute of it!

Eleanor Ames, or rather Ellie, the main character of the book is very curious about the circumstances behind the death of her fellow classmate and friend, Simon.  She becomes determined to learn the truth about what happened that night she last saw him and quickly makes friends with the popular crowd at school hoping that will give her answers, but ends up raising more questions.  Her investigation leads her into some interesting and compromising situations…which I can’t really say a whole lot about without spoiling the whole book.

Meanwhile, Miles, Ellie’s new neighbor, has enrolled in Ellie’s private school and has some secrets of his own that intrigue Ellie especially since he also seems curious about Simon’s death. His secrets are slowly revealed as you read the story…secrets that will remain secrets until you read the story…secrets I can’t say anything more about without spoiling a big part of the plot…but trust me, they are good and interesting and definitely add a new twist to things!  Anyway, as I was saying, as Ellie and Miles enter the same circle of popular kids at school they have some run-ins that are quite interesting and revealing as both try to figure each other out…but again, I don’t want to say too much.

I will say that Ellie and Miles are such smart and likeable characters.  Both have secrets (there’s that word again!) that they are keeping and are so different from one another, yet there is a chemistry between the two that is hard for you to miss.  I loved their interactions! Sparks fly whenever they are together leading to some memorable and magical scenes.  However, Ellie’s a tough cookie with plenty of snark and a con-artist past that she can’t seem to escape or let go of no matter how hard she tries.  She struggles with who she really is after living a life full of cons.  But she uses her past to help her in her amateur sleuthing…Nancy Drew, Veronica Mars, and female detectives everywhere would be proud.  Then there is Miles, a serious character who sees the world in black and white with no shades of grey.  Their relationship is complicated, but fascinating to watch unfold as we learn some unexpected things about these two characters.

I guess that is all I can really say about Ellie and Miles for now and should turn to the mystery that drives the story and main character. Hmm…wow, not spoiling the story and mystery is so hard…much harder than I thought it would be.  I can say that the central mystery of the whole book, Simon’s death, is quite intriguing and took some twists and turns I wasn’t expecting as secrets and lies were revealed and lives were changed.  This book was everything I could want in a good mystery.  There were plenty of suspects, motives, red herrings, and other trails that our sleuth follows as she uncovers the facts of the case…including some she probably wishes she hadn’t discovered.  And just when you think you have it figured out, Bam! Another twist!  I became just as determined as Ellie to learn the truth and couldn’t stop reading and speculating.

I need more books like this in my life! Chasing Truth is definitely a keeper and one I plan to read again someday…and I hope we see more of Ellie in the future!

My Rating: 5 Stars
