Talk about All Shook Up! This book pushed almost every emotional button inside of me and I am still not quite over it.
With the blessing of her adoptive parents, Natalie starts a search for her birth mom after running across a photo of a woman in a box of donated items at the thrift store where she works. Joining her on this search is Casey, a local firefighter who donated the box after finding it in the basement his newly-purchased house. As the two spend time together they quickly bond and form quite the flirty and fun friendship.
All Shook Up surprised me with the multitude of emotions it was able to make me feel. It was not just a light read, as the cover and blurb might suggest to some. Yes, there are quite a few fun moments and a lot of witty banter but there are a few heavy, emotional moments and topics dealt with as well.
While Natalie’s search is what originally brings the two together, it is easy to see that the friendship between Natalie and Casey is about so much more than that and that is part of what I really enjoyed about this book. I am a sucker for a good friends-to-lovers story and this one didn't disappoint. There were definitely some moments between the two that made me smile, as they bonded over classic music, movies, TV shows, and more.
But on the flipside of that, there were also moments that made me sad or touched on other emotions that I definitely was not expecting when I started this book. However, I cannot imagine the story without these moments. The story would definitely not be the same and I probably would not have enjoyed reading it as much as I did. They added a nice balance to the story making the characters more real.
I do have to admit that at first I was worried that I wasn’t going to like Natalie and Casey…they seemed almost too perfect. But as I continued reading, I realized there were reasons for this and I began to appreciate how the author revealed the information about each of them bit by bit. These characters became real people with the same flaws, insecurities, and quirks as you and me. I became invested in the lives of these characters and their story. And once they began dropping references to classic music, movies, and TV shows, they definitely won me over.
My only complaint would be that we never got Casey’s point-of-view. The entire story is told in first person from Natalie’s point-of-view and I know that technically it is HER story, but it would definitely be interesting to know what was going on in Casey’s head during everything. He intrigues me…plus I have a thing for firefighters…and accents…and musicians…and well, he’s an interesting character.
Anyway…
All Shook Up is a quick read with plenty of moments to make you smile and quite possibly even laugh, and a few that might make you shed a tear or two.
Now I want to go listen to some classic tunes… “Take Good Care of My Baby” is still running through my head.
My Rating: 4 ½ Stars

Natalie’s world is shaken to its core when she discovers an old photo of a woman who looks like her. Could this woman be related to her birth mother, who put Natalie up for adoption as a baby? When she tracks down the person who dumped the photo album at her thrift shop, she’s shaken again. Especially when the gorgeous fire-fighting guitarist offers to help her find the owner. They quickly become friends – which is all they’ll be, as far as Natalie’s concerned. Her rebellious youth turned her off cheating men, and the new Natalie is looking for true love and a family of her own – something Casey isn’t willing to provide. But how long can Natalie ignore her undeniable attraction to the man with the Irish accent and the broken-down ’57 Chevy?
In Chelsey Krause’s second novel, friends become lovers over a whirlwind summer of rockabilly rhythms, twirling skirts, and a mystery that takes them hilariously far out of their element.
