Truth or Dare was never this much fun…
Annie McFarland is sick of being a shy nobody. A session at summer camp seems like the perfect opportunity to reinvent herself—gain some confidence, kiss a boy, be whoever she wants to be. A few days in, she’s already set her sights on über-hottie Kyle. Too bad her fear of water keeps her away from the lake, where Kyle is always hanging out.
Jacob Fazio is at Camp Pine Ridge after one too many screw-ups. Junior counseling seems like punishment enough, but the rigid no-fraternizing-with-campers rules harsh his chill. When a night of Truth or Dare gets him roped into teaching Annie how to swim, she begs him to also teach her how to snag Kyle. Late-night swim sessions turn into late-night kissing sessions…but there’s more on the line than just their hearts. If they get caught, Jake’s headed straight to juvie, but Annie’s more than ready to dare him to reveal the truth.

In Daring the Bad Boy, author Monica Murphy manages to take the classic good girl falls for the bad boy story line and set it in a perfect location…summer camp.
Annie, an introverted bookworm, has come to camp to spread her wings and reinvent herself. Tired of being the one everyone makes fun of or ignores, she thinks camp might be the perfect way to experience new things and make new friends. Meanwhile, the camp is the last place Jake wants to be, but after a brush with the law, his father is forcing him to do his community service at the camp, which happens to be run by Jake’s uncle. When Jake saves Annie after a game of Truth or Dare goes horribly wrong, these two very different people manage to form a connection as they get to know each other. Suddenly, their summer at camp becomes something neither one expected.
Let’s talk about Annie, shall we? I have to confess, she was not my favorite character. And at times it was even a struggle for me to like her. At first, I thought, “Yes! An introverted girl who loves to read! I can so relate!” But then when she got to camp she started to change and it wasn’t always good. She was way too worried about what others thought of and said about her and let that shape her actions, which I didn’t care for. However, her interactions with Jake help make her more likeable as she seems to be more real around him, if that makes sense. He helps her gain self-confidence and take more chances. They are so good together.
While I am still on the fence about Annie, there is no doubt in my mind that I love Jake. He was the perfect bad boy with a good and caring heart. True, he starts out with some questionable choices and actions, but those are understandable considering his past and his current relationship status with his dad. He is hurting inside and doesn’t know what to do about it. When he meets Annie, she brings out the kind and caring side of him (which I guess is a point in her favor) and he becomes someone you want to see succeed…a true hero. I looked forward to the sections told from his point of view.
Annie and Jake bring out the best in each other which makes them a perfect couple despite their differences. And that is what I really liked about this book. It’s about falling in love with someone you never would have expected to fall for and trying to make that work despite all of the obstacles in your way. Annie and Jake have to decide if their relationship is worth fighting for as they face many challenges. It would be interesting to see how their relationship would evolve over the years though…if they stay together.
